Painting With Light

As an exercise in my latest photography class, we had to paint with light.

This photo was taken in a totally darkened room. I chose a shutter speed of 15 seconds and then with a small flash light I bathed the torch for most of the 15 seconds, but also brushed the face and arm and sword for varying lengths of time with the beam of light.

Lots of trial and error to get the shutter speed and amount of "painting" with the light beam for the desired outcome, but a good, dramatic result, me thinks. It would have been better if I'd had something to act as a filter make the light beam a bit more red or warm in colour to better mimic a torch flame. But I used an LED book light, which offers more moonlight than flame, really.

Sorry it's been awhile since I"ve blogged. Have some new art to share -- a piece from an artist I already own (in spades) and a piece from an artist new to my collection. Will share those images soon.

Some big news too, but reveal that quite yet.

Hi Heipel, Great photo. I have the same camera, but I did not have time lately to do much with it, just some macro in the parks in NJ. Have you seen new Daniel Barkley website. Great new pieces! He is the Best what Canada can offer. Best, Egon

Egon, hi.

Have seen the updated website now! Always hurts to see many of those works that are NOT available! :) Did you say Daniel was going to have a show at your gallery?
