Like a Fish Out of Water

I'm pretty sure I've blogged about Dave Sheppard before -- one of three artists represented in my humble collection multiple times. Anyway, I just had this painting of his ("Like a Fish Out of Water") re-framed and it so fundamentally transformed what was already a remarkable painting (oil on board, btw) into something yet better. The painting came a few years ago from the gallery in St. John's in simply a horrid '70s framing job -- right down to the plastic insert and faux linen mat... Groan. I finally couldn't take it anymore and had it redone. Another painting from the same gallery (a great gallery, btw, which I believe has since changed its framing strategies :) I also just had reframed -- gorgeous landscape by the French painter Jean Claude Roy -- which had been in the identical frame including a plastic insert and faux linen mat (on oil paintings, no less!).
Anyway, Dave is going to have a "show" this fall or winter which I'll alert you to. In the meantime visit squarewheelstudio.com He's a remarkable printmaker too. Note the painting (under new works, I believe) with its subject a deer stag with human body complete with clean bleeding bullet hole in the chest. I SO want that painting, should you be thinking ahead to any gift buying for me.
