Dang, tagged.

One of those question lists, for which I can blame Bert (bertarcher.net -- sorry no Blogger features available to me so no nice hyperlink there):

1.) Name a book that you want to share so much that you keep giving away copies.

My literary proselytizing is mainly theoretical as I usually buy cloth cover and am too cheap to give my books away, or buy paperback for others, however, some years ago I bought several people Dorothy Allison's "Bastard Out of Carolina" in paperback 'cause everyone needs to read that book and people were turning their noses up at a description of the plot; more recently I've been telling others to buy Fagles' translation of The Odyssey, and currently I think everyone should have a copy of Martin's translation of Metamorphoses -- and have been lobbying three of my favourite artists to paint Phaethon in his ill fated chariot ride. Oh, and then there's any Lorna Crozier poetry collection, which I've given as gifts numerous times. Ah, "name A book..." I'll stop.

2) Name a piece of music that changed the way you listen to music.

I'm musically illiterate, and thus await such a moment.

3) Name a film you can watch again and again without fatigue.

"Hana-bi," "The Way Home," "Billy Elliot," "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer...," "Dr. Strangelove," "Cat Ballou"

4) Name a performer for whom you suspend all disbelief.

Meryl Streep, Dame Judy Dench, Takeshi Kitano.

5) Name a work of art you'd like to live with.

That question just hurts what with public galleries and my lack of cash preventing so many works finding their way to my home...
Really anything by Caravaggio, but if I must choose just one, then I choose three: "Salome receives the Head of Saint John the Baptist," "Amor Victorious," "John the Baptist (Youth with a Ram)"

6)Name a work of fiction that has penetrated your real life.

Moby Dick

7) Name a punch line that always makes you laugh.

"PS, your cunt's in the sink." (a real punch line, btw)

If my link function worked I'd tag Mark with these questions.

The Homo Miss Manners?

Mark (pictured) performed at a reading/music series (Pontiac Quarterly at the Drake Hotel) last evening.

Basically, Mark (see blog at markcosgrove.com -- where we're promised a video of the performance) provided a very helpful and tastefully presented info and etiquette session for hooking up, er, dating via the Internet. Ahem.

Delightfully done, including a PowerPoint presentation.

I have much goofier pictures of Mark during his performance, but thought the very serious foundational messages in his presentation required the "look" of this shot :)

Good job, Mark.

More Barkley (part I 'cause Blogger's a bitch with Mac)

A few photographs, mainly detail shots of larger paintings, from Daniel Barkley's show of new works at the O'Connor Gallery in Toronto. I should have taken a few full painting shots, but made a rash lens choice. Anyway, this is meant to be a teaser to make you go see the works for yourself, 'cause photographs of paintings very closely approach being artistic profanity compared to standing live before the painting.

Daniel Barkley

This painting ("The Flood", 2004, acrylic on canvas, 42"x47") is by Daniel Barkley -- I took the photo this evening as the painting is, glory be to credit limits, on MY wall. I purchased it a couple of years ago.

Says Monika Burman in this month's MAG (monthly art guide) of Mr. Barkley: "Danile Barkley's paintings prove that the human form continues to have the power to take your breath away. ...images...rich with authentic expressions of comtemplation, anxiety and discovery... Barkley recognizes the continuum of great figurative painting and has made a place within it."

Daniel Barkley's show of new paintings at O'Connor Gallery (opens this Friday, 7-9 p.m., but the works are already up) is one of those shows that if I had a sugar daddy I'd be witholding my end of the bargain until I could simply buy all of the 14 or so new Barkley works (save but one piece, which is still a fine painting I just mustn't have it). Literally, I need to own all of these latest works. And yes, mine is an obsession for buying art, but I am discerning, really -- there is far more I hate or that's not to my taste than those that I must have out there. No, I'd buy everything in Barkley's latest show 'cause it's all mesmorizingly fantastic. It is time the National Gallery buys one of this man's works. Pronto.

My other Barkley is a (about 10x30 inches) watercolour on paper,"Study for Icarus I" I can't show you that one as he's off on a wee field trip and unavailable for my camera's lens.

At the same time as the show of new Barkley works at O'Connor (Berkley & Queen Streets, right on the southeast corner, btw) there will be a retrospective of Barkley's older works (he's not old; born in '62) at the Barnicke gallery at the U of T's Hart House -- that show's reception is this Thursday from 5-7 p.m. And "my" Icarus will be part of the show! Cool, eh.

For info on the retrospective at Hart House at the U. of Toronto go here:
http://www.utoronto.ca/gallery/archives/barkley_press.html

I'll post photos of my favourites of the new works after the show's opened. Do make a point to see the new works at O'Connor, if you like figurative art, or if you want to discover just how much you absolutely fucking adore figurative art.

Epiphany

Ah, no. I have not had an epiphany. Yesterday was THE Epiphany, January 6 -- marking the three Wise Men visiting the baby Jesus in the manger.

It was a friend's 50th birthday (Happy birthday Kevin!). A lovely event of taste bud dancing food, fine music from a trio (dang, they were good -- sorry I can't remember their name) and good company. Venue was an art gallery, stuck in the light-industrial maze of Etobicoke, of all places.

I was given the delightful task of raising a toast to the birthday, ah, boy -- here the toast giving is captured in a photo. I am (oddly?) hesitant to post friends' photos on my blog, thus my own mug posted here.

The other reason to post this photo is the tie, which was a gift brought me by Vash after her visit to Italy earlier this winter. (She also bitterly bitches about never getting mentioned here...).
